Wait, what?
Granular synthesis is the process of taking in an incoming waveform, chopping it up and rearranging it in any number of ways. The Charlie Foxtrot offers several ways of accomplishing this with four knobs (not including Preamp and Mix, which controls the level of a high-quality JFET preamp and wet/dry blend, respectively). These four knobs are [Buffer/Grain] Size, Duration, Threshold and a mode selection knob.
These four modes are ST[utter] (no pitch modulation), Up [arrow] (pitch modulated up, randomized speed/modulation amount) Down [arrow] (pitch modulated down, randomized speed/modulation), Both [arrows] (both Up and Down modes simultaneously) and R[andom] (randomly selects any of the first four modes with a time interval, but mostly selects "Stutter" mode).
The Threshold control sets a threshold for auto-capturing of the input signal. This control requires some careful curation, as it controls how sensitive the Foxtrot is with regards to "grabbing onto" a piece of your signal and chewing it up. When the knob is turned all the way back, the triggering is manual. When it is all the way up, it will capture the end of the duration.
Adding to the feature set is Malekko's unique all-inclusive CV/EXP control setup. By holding the switch and inserting an expression pedal, users can simultaneously control up to four knobs (Mode, Threshold, Size and Duration) and sweep each one either backwards OR forwards by turning each knob in the desired direction. This means that players can, with one sweep of an expression pedal, move two knobs forward and two knobs backward, or any combination. This opens up the possibilities to near-limitless.
